The Vineyards and Terroir of Domaine Paul Mas

The arrogant frog was born in the Hérault Valley in the southern French Languedoc, not far from the small town of Pézenas. This town inspired the famous playwright Molière and is only a half-hour drive from the Mediterranean coast.

The team led by oenologist Jean-Claude Mas is the defining and most important factor in the winemaking process. All wines, from fermentation to bottling, are overseen by the "Humble Winemaker," as he calls himself.

Jean-Claude Mas is a fourth-generation winemaker. A story from his childhood is often told. At the age of just 3, he strayed from his mother during the grape harvest. He walked the 2-kilometer path from the vineyard to the cellar to help his father and grandfather with the pressing and winemaking. Since then, his interest and passion for wine have never waned.

In the early 90s, Jean-Claude dealt with wines like Château du Pape Clément or Château Talbot from Bordeaux, where he worked for four years. These experiences were and are crucial for his handling of grapes from Languedoc today. In 1995, he returned to his roots. Jean-Claude Mas is considered one of the pioneers of the "new Languedoc" or the "new age" of wine in France, advocating for the restoration of the region's status where wine culture is over 2000 years old.
